Speaking on the "Pat McAfee Show," Bill Belichick offered up a ringing endorsement for Mike Vrabel as Patriots head coach.

Mike Vrabel is staring at an uphill climb when it comes to getting the Patriots back on track as contenders in the AFC.
But the new Patriots head coach has already received one impressive vote of confidence in former New England head coach Bill Belichick.
While Belichick has usually opted to either take the high road or twist the knife with criticism this year when asked about the state of his former team, the UNC head coach offered a ringing endorsement of Vrabel Monday during his weekly appearance on ESPN’s “Pat McAfee Show.”
“Certainly his entry in coaching was no surprise to anyone that knew him. Coached him at New England. I talked to him when he was at Ohio State, and then when he went to the Texans, and then, of course, at Tennessee,” Belichick told McAfee. “We practiced against them. I’ve stayed in very close contact with Mike. So I have a ton of respect for Mike.”

“I think he does a great job. He prepares his teams well, they’re very good in situational football, they’re tough, they’re competitive, they’re smart — just like he was as a player.”
Vrabel — who won three Super Bowls as a linebacker under Belichick in Foxborough — matched up against Belichick three times during his coaching career with the Titans.
Even though New England and Tennessee split their regular-season meetings in 2018 and 2021 when Vrabel and Belichick coached against each other, Vrabel did play a key role in shuttering the Patriots dynasty.

The Titans defeated the Patriots in the 2019 AFC Wild Card Round in what ended up being Tom Brady’s final game with the team.
While Vrabel and the Titans might have set the stage for New England’s (admittedly inevitable) decline in 2019, Belichick stressed that his former player has the means to get the Patriots back to respectability moving forward.
“I think teams that he’s coached and the positions he’s coached follow very much in his playing style and his preparation style,” Belichick said of Vrabel. “So, I love Mike. I love everything that he stands for as a football coach, and I have a lot of respect for him. I’m sure he’ll do a great job.”
Vrabel’s ties to New England and his profile as a demanding, defensive-minded coach might draw some parallels to Belichick.
But the Patriots’ new head coach acknowledged on Monday that he isn’t looking to follow in Belichick’s footsteps — nor mimic his approach in Foxborough.
“I’m not Bill, and I’m not Bill Cowher, I’m not anyone other than me,” Vrabel said. “I’ve taken those experiences, and I’ve tried to form what I believe is critical to the success of a football team and an organization.

“To say what those are going to look like, hopefully just as successful. And our goals will be to win the AFC East, to host home playoff games, and to compete for championships. That’s what it’s going to take.”
