What Demi Moore said to hide her disappointing Oscars loss

You have to think that Demi Moore didn’t just spend time rehearsing a memorable speech for a much-predicted win for best actress at Sunday’s Academy Awards.
A 40-year Hollywood veteran, “The Substance” star probably also mentally prepared for how she would react if her name wasn’t called, knowing that her facial expressions and body language would be caught on live camera for the world to see.
In that way, Moore didn’t disappoint, even as she valiantly tried to hide her own disappointment upon hearing the name Mikey Madison announced instead of her own. Moore briefly smiled, may have tensed her jaw and uttered one word to the person next to her, according to a lip-reader hired by the Daily Mail to decipher her reaction.
“Demi says ‘nice,’ but she isn’t smiling when she says it,” Nicola Hickling told the Daily Mail. “Her body is almost nodding like she had to force herself to say it.”

Moore’s loss to the 25-year-old “Anora” star was clearly one of the night’s big upsets, given that the 62-year-old star of “Ghost” and “Indecent Proposal” was riding a wave of good will for her return to the movie spotlight with her daring, metatextual performance in “The Substance,” portraying a once- famous actress going to extreme lengths to reverse the effects of aging.
During her awards-season campaign, a grateful-sounding Moore often made the point that her own career opportunities diminished as she aged, or that she wasn’t taken seriously as an actor when she was young because she made more crowd-pleasing movies that tended to emphasize her beauty.
Moore seemed on course to take home the coveted Oscar Sunday night for her turn in the stylish horror film, after nabbing top precursor awards: best actress at the Golden Globes, SAG Awards, and Critics Choice Awards. But her winning streak ended with Madison’s upset victory, which was part of an “Anora” sweep
The low-budget film, directed by Sean Baker, won five awards at the ceremony, for original screenplay, best editing, best director, best picture, and Madison’s best actress in a leading role. The film, about Madison’s sex worker who impulsively marries the spoiled son of a Russian oligarch, premiered at the Cannes film festival, where it won the Palme d’Or, the highest honor.
Madison seemed to be in shock and said she was “nervous” after her name was called and she made her way to the stage. “Wow. This is very surreal,” she said. “I grew up in Los Angeles, but Hollywood always felt so far away from me, so to be here, standing in this room today, is really incredible.”
As Madison spoke, the camera briefly cut away to her Moore as Madison praised her and their fellow nominees, Fernanda Torres for “I’m Still Here,” “Emilia Pérez” star Karla Sofía Gascón and “Wicked” actress Cynthia Erivo. Moore smiled some more and touched her heart as Madison said, “I also just want to recognize the thoughtful, intelligent, beautiful, breathtaking work of my fellow nominees. I’m honored to be recognized alongside all of you.”

Following the ceremony, Moore kept up the smiling exterior and didn’t miss a beat as she attended the Vanity Fair Oscars Party alongside her three daughters, Rumer Willis, Scout Willis and Tallulah Willis, People reported. She also posed on the party’s red carpet in a stunning gold halter dress.
But later Sunday night, Moore took in her loss in a very relatable way, by slipping into a comfortable white bathrobe and indulging in a carb-loaded taste from two massive trays of French fries. Her daughter Tallulah shared a photo of her mother relaxing in what appeared to be a nearby hotel suite, writing: “My winner.”
Older sister Scout reposted the image, writing, “Queen of my heart!” According to People, she also wrote in a message on her Instagram Stories: “So beyond proud, this woman is nothing but integrity, bright beaming light and love! What grace. I’ve never been proud to be her daughter.”
Prior to Moore’s Oscars defeat, her eldest daughter Rumor also posted a tribute to her mom on Instagram, sharing her pride in her mother’s legendary career: “Watching you today, standing in your power, in your brilliance, in the culmination of decades of hard work, resilience, and undeniable talent — I have never been more proud.”
