What Rick Steinâs ex-wife Jill blew £80,000 on after bitter divorce
In a new interview she also revealed how two well known restaurants were their 'worst investment' and in 'wrong location'
Rick Steinâs ex-wife Jill has revealed what she immediately went out and spent £80,000 on after their bitter divorce. Rick, 74, married his first wife Jill in 1975 and the couple had three sons together, Jack, Edward, and Charles.
But sadly Rick and Jillâs marriage ended in 2007 after Rick became involved in a five year long secret affair. Speaking to The Times money section, Jill, 77, spoke out about how she lives - and the impact of the divorce.
After they split, Jill explained sheâd been egged on by her friend to splash out and admitted she bought a sports car. She said: âThe £80,000 two-seater Mercedes SL convertible sports car I bought following my split from Rick. It was a bit of a flamboyant thing to do, but my friends egged me on, and it gave me a huge amount of enjoyment. Nowadays I drive a more sensible car, a Mercedes hatchback.â
The entrepreneur also explained the âworstâ decisions they made - and opening restaurants in Falmouth and Porthleven were highlighted - which closed down in 2021 and 2020 respectively. Jill said on her âworst investment: âOpening our restaurants in Falmouth and Porthleven, in west Cornwall. The Falmouth site was in the wrong location and Porthleven is very seasonal. When Rick and I made decisions together we didnât really put a foot wrong, but once other people came into the frame, after our separation, it was easy to agree to things despite sensing at the back of oneâs mind that it wasnât a good idea. Weâve since got rid of both restaurants.â
Even though theyâve split, Jill and Rick still are co-owners of the company. The Times reported each have 38 per cent stake, and their three grown-up sons also own a share.
On where she lives, Jill revealed: âI live in a beautiful four-bedroom Georgian house with a sea view just outside Padstow, which Rick and I bought for £125,000 about 36 years ago when we were married. Iâve lived there since our divorce. Prior to that we lived in a house that Rickâs mother had given us out at Trevose Head, but it was a bit remote. I also own a cottage in the village of Penrose, between Padstow and St Merryn, which I bought about 12 years ago for £275,000. I spent a further £300,000 doing it up and have been renting it out as a holiday let ever since.â
It was when Rick first got on TV with his âTaste of the Seaâ series in 1995, that Jill said they first had any money: ââhich allowed us to put extra money into the business [from the TV show and spin-off books], buy other properties and grow the restaurant chain. Cornwall wasnât really on the culinary map when Rick wrote his first cookbook, English Seafood Cookery (1988) â the furthest that most London-based journalists were prepared to travel back then was the Cotswolds.â
