Where Was All the Makeup at the 2025 Oscars?
This year, stars like Kim Kardashian, Miley Cyrus, Mikey Madison, and Michelle Yeoh evoked an illusion of effortlessness with barely-there beauty—and it was a refreshing change.
When Kim Kardashian arrived at the Oscars 2025 after-party, it became clear we've reached the peak of no-makeup makeup and understated glam—especially when paired with classic high-drama red carpet gowns (or, as we lovingly called it on Oscar night, prom-core.)
Kardashian, once the queen of contour, has never looked quite as undone on a carpet as she did at the Vanity Fair Oscar Party Sunday night, pairing a purposefully crinkled and voluminous white Balenciaga gown with a sleek bun and a barely-there makeup look.
Sure, she wore taupe eyeshadow with an inner-corner highlight, but her glowy skin was kept even, her brows lightly brushed, and her lips appeared to be treated with just a touch of nude liner and some gloss. Frankly, it might be my favorite Kim Kardashian glam look to date.

It seemed many celebs at the Oscars 2025 and its subsequent after-parties were attempting to evoke a similar illusion of effortlessness, including Kardashian's sister, Kylie Jenner, and pop star Miley Cyrus, who softened her dramatic smokey liner with barely there brows, natural looking skin, and a touch of gloss on unlined lips.

“I got up at 6 a.m. so they could do my makeup in a way that looks like I didn't actually do my makeup,” Scarlett Johansson joked while presenting the Academy Award for best makeup and hairstyling, but that's not really a joke, is it?

Sofia Richie's hairstylist Kathleen Riley worked hard to create a simple look that would not distract from her client's glamorous dress—an ethos that seemed to extend to the rest of Richie's glam by makeup artist Emily Cheng.
“The dress is incredibly detailed and beautiful and wanted the hair to complement the dress without trying to compete with it," Riley said in a statement to press. “By opting for a refined yet understated look we allowed the intricate design of the dress to be the main focus while still embracing Sofia’s chic, effortless aesthetic.”

It's all about balance. First-time Oscar winner Mikey Madison went for an uncharacteristically undone look despite her ongoing commitment to winged eyeliner. In contrast with her classic Dior gown and archival Tiffany & Co. jewels, the Anora star opted for a chic if imperfect updo with loose strands to keep the look from leaning too hard into an Old Hollywood aesthetic. Hairstylist Rena Calhoun describes the look as a “vintage updo with a modern twist.”

Michelle Yeoh was another example of allowing her dramatic dress do the talking. The Wicked star wore a bold blue Balenciaga gown with a flowing train to the 2025 Oscars yet kept her hair and makeup fairly minimal with a slicked-back bun and subtle makeup with rosy touches that looked natural, not overdone.

As ScarJo would agree, it takes a lot of effort to look so effortless.
