The historical epic stars Adrien Brody as Laszlo Toth, a fictitious Jewish Hungarian architect and Holocaust survivor who immigrates to Pennsylvania. Guy Pearceās Harrison Lee Van Buren, a wealthy industrialist, enlists him to build a massive, modern church on the outskirts of his property, leading Toth to grapple with his desire to create against his qualms about building a church.
Felicity Jones plays Brodyās wife, ErzsĆ©bet and Joe Alwyn plays Pearceās brutish son. The film reflects on themes of artistic integrity and the immigrant experience. Notably, this marks Brodyās second Best Actor Oscars trophy for playing a Holocaust survivor after 2002ās The Pianist.
Rolling Stone called the film a ānew great American masterpiece,ā with critic David Fear singling out Brodyās performance, writing, āYou can trace bits of the lives and careers of Louis Kahn and Marcel Breur in LĆ”zslĆ³ TĆ³thās DNA, though Brody ā who hasnāt done work of this depth and conveyed such emotional devastation since The Pianist ā is adding his own colors and shades to this broken manās psychological makeup.
