Following a Brooklyn stripper's spontaneous marriage to a mega-rich Russian businessman's 21-year-old son, Anora's genius comedic timing and tragic undertones won the indie film five Oscars at last night's ceremony.

Sean Baker broke Oscar records as the first person to personally win four Academy Awards for a single film - for directing, editing, writing and producing Anora. Rising star Mikey Madison who played Anora- nicknamed 'Ani'- also came away with the Oscar for Best Actress.

But as the tragicomedy makes headlines for its record-breaking Oscars sweep, many are wondering where the movie was filmed.

While it's clear that the film is based in Brooklyn, most of the places filmed in the movie including bars, restaurants and clubs feature a large proportion of Russian characters, leading people to wonder where exactly the film is supposed to be set.

Here's everything you need to know about where Anora was filmed and set.

The film is mostly set in the snowy Brooklyn neighbourhood of Brighton Beach and the Coney Island boardwalk. But why are so many of the nameless background characters Russian in this Brooklyn-based film?

Brighton Beach has the largest concentration of Russian-speaking immigrants in the US. The area has even been nicknamed "Little Odessa" after the Ukrainian port city of Odesa.

Many Russian Jews settled in Brighton Beach during the 1920s, and in the 1970s, many Soviet immigrants- largely Ashkenazi Jews from Russia and Ukraine- settled in this multicultural neighbourhood.

The collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991 also led thousands of former Soviet citizens to immigrate to the United States.

A linguistic study of the area revealed that Russian and Ukrainian are sometimes more commonly spoken than English on the streets of Brighton Beach.

The neighbourhood has many Russian restaurants, Georgian bakeries, Orthodox churches, and international markets, which explains why so many of the less-important faces in Anora were speaking Russian.

The character Anora herself also has Russian connections as the character's grandmother had immigrated to the US from there.
