Two months into the second Donald Trump presidency, Whoopi Goldberg is encouraging people to take time out for themselves, but not lose sight of the fight ahead.
“I think both things can exist on the same plane,” she told Rolling Stone, at an Oscars event celebrating her Whoopi Prosecco brand. “Some days you just want to say, you know, ‘I don’t really want to [talk], I don’t want to deal with it, because it’s just overwhelming. Or, you know what? ‘Let us drink to ourselves,’ because if not us, then who?” she says. “But we’ve been here before. We’ve done this, we’ve dealt with this before and it’s just a pain in the behind. And you think, ‘Okay, are we back to this?’ Well, yeah, I guess so. But nobody’s gonna stop fighting.”
Goldberg says the idea of sitting down to share a drink and share meaningful conversation with others was what inspired her to launch Whoopi Prosecco, her namesake sparkling wine brand. While the actor and TV host may spend her weekdays moderating discussions on The View, Goldberg hopes her wine will inspire some fruitful debate at home too. “I think you should have a great time, great conversations with your friends, and a great bottle of Prosecco,” she says in the official product description.

Goldberg was joined at her Whoopi Prosecco Oscars party by her family, along with actors Jonathan Majors and Meagan Good, former Lakers star and NBA coach Derek Fisher, NFL player Ray-Ray McCloud III, and Grey’s Anatomy actor Jason George, among others. The EGOT winner says she the decision to add “prosecco maker” to her resume was not something she took lightly.
“Everyone else had tequila and all these other things, and there weren’t really any women of color having anything to do with prosecco, so I thought, ‘Well, why not? We’ll start with this,'” she shares. “And so I tested it amongst a lot of my friends for over a year to make sure it has the right sweetness, and doesn’t give you a headache, and doesn’t have any garbage in it. It’s really quite something,” she says, “to bring something into the world that works.”
Whoopi Prosecco is now available nationwide and online through sites like Cask Cartel and Minibar Delivery. Produced in the Veneto region of Italy, the sparkling wine is light and dry, with notes of apple, pear and soft florals. First unveiled a few years ago, the product has been updated with a new bottling and new packaging that Goldberg says harks back to artwork at old jazz clubs and performance venues.
“You could put on all of Motown, all of Simon Garfunkel and Paul Simon, all of Roberta [Flack] and The Chambers Brothers,” she offers, when asked about the perfect prosecco sipping playlist. “That’s the soundtrack.”
As for celebrating the brand during the Oscars, the 1990 Best Supporting Actress winner — who introduced a Quincy Jones tribute at this year’s ceremony — says it only made sense to pay it forward. “In the old days, we’d have Cristal and leave it in people’s hotel rooms,” she says. “So this is my version of Cristal; this is Whoop-stal, and we are celebrating all those people who have been nominated and celebrating the life of all the folks like Quincy Jones and Gene Hackman that we’ve lost this year. So it’s a nice celebration.”
