Michael Caine is a cultural icon within the canon of British cinema, becoming globally celebrated for his performances in landmark films such as The Italian Job, Sleuth and The Icpress File. The actor represents a suave and stylish era in cinema, with a heightened sense of masculinity as action heroes would drive cars from the top of cliffs and women were mere objects in their lives to assert this sense of manhood and staggering ego.
For Caine, his reputation was built from this womanising image, with his Cockney accent and smooth sense of charm becoming synonymous with his effortlessly relaxed characters, even in the face of death or pressing danger. Whether it be the fast-paced action of The Italian Job or the baffling sexual appeal of his character in Alfie, Caine has starred in hundreds of films that cemented his position as one of the most beloved cinematic figures. Â
While the actor has starred in a number of successful commercial films, such as the Batman series, and also regularly appears in Christopher Nolanâs world, he has also found success through independent projects like Hannah and her Sisters, Youth, and Educating Rita, adding colourful characters to each one and shining with his infectious screen presence.Â
Despite starring in some of the most influential films of all time and breaking barriers for other working-class actors after finding success in a classically elitist industry, the actor has only won two Academy Awards, both for âBest Supporting Actorâ. But which films were they?
Which films won Michael Caine his Oscars?
Woody Allen is one of the most divisive figures in the film industry, yet despite this, has continued working for the entirety of his career. He is most known for films like Annie Hall, Manhattan and Midnight in Paris, and he often casts himself in the films as a neurotic intellectual who philosophises about his many quandaries and deep thoughts. He typically uses this as a weapon against the women in the film, trying to make them feel inferior by using needless language to describe banal concepts and thoughts, coming across as somewhat neurotic and self-important.Â
However, he has found success in this particular style of dialogue, which is often fast-paced and very naturalistic, adopting a âwalking and talkingâ style of filmmaking. Caine ended up working with Allen on his 1986 film Hannah and Her Sisters, playing the role of Elliot. It was this performance that won him his first Academy Award, winning for âBest Supporting Actorâ. Â
This was not his only success story at the esteemed award ceremony, with Caine also winning for âBest Supporting Actorâ nearly ten years later with The Cider House Rules in 1999. The actor starred alongside Tobey Maguire and Charlize Theron, playing Dr Wilbur Larch in the story. The actor has not yet won another Academy Award, but has reached critical acclaim for performances in Educating Rita, Alfie, Little Voice and The Quiet American. Caine announced his retirement from acting in 2023, which came after several performances in the films of Christopher Nolan.Â
