White Lotus Season 3: who dies? Finale leaves viewers in disbelief
SPOILER ALERT: Read on to discover who died in the dramatic season finale of HBO’s White Lotus
White Lotus season three has finally come to an end — and what a satisfying conclusion we have been left with.
Framed by Eastern mysticism, Mike White’s latest series has featured plenty of twists, turns, and symbolism surrounding the number three. Many White Lotus fans were already speculating that this bumper series might include more than one death, and of course, White didn’t disappoint.
After all, Chelsea (Aimee Lou Wood) had previously warned that bad things ‘come in threes’.
Ever since the show first aired, the internet has been alight with wild fan theories about who dies, who survives, and what causes the final shootout.
And now we finally have our answers: yes, that fruit everyone has been speculating about did appear in Sunday night’s episode, and yes, some eagle-eyed viewers did uncover a costume accessory that seemingly gave away the season’s most heartbreaking death. It’s tragic, raw, and undoubtedly entertaining (and yes, there are some plot twists we didn’t see coming).
More than anything, White left viewers with the perfect dose of gratification and frustration as the final scene closed with several characters literally sailing off into the sunset. As the credits roll, it’s hard not to reflect on the grotesque and chaotic lives of the filfthy rich — and wonder whether anything will ever change (even after multiple murders).
So who died in White Lotus season 3? You’ve been warned that there are spoilers ahead.
Jim Hollinger
Rick’s moment of peace is short-lived after he has yet another run-in with who he thinks killed his father. The troubled character simply can’t control his fatal flaw and finally acts on what has consumed him almost all his life.
After a touching moment over breakfast with Chelsea, Rick’s inner peace is shattered when Hollinger (Scott Glenn) criticises Rick’s mother and father.
After branding Rick’s father “no saint,” the character’s blood boils to a point of no return. What’s even more heartbreaking is that he seemingly tries to control his anger and requests a meeting with the spiritual guidance leader, only to be turned down due to another booking.
Seeing red, Rick storms up to the Hollingers as they pose for photographs, pulls out Jim’s gun, and shoots him twice in the chest.
In a twist that some have already predicted, Sritala (Lek Patravadi) finally reveals to Rick: “He’s your father, he’s your father. He told me. He’s your father!”

An ensuing shootout following Hollinger’s death sees Rick also lose the person closest to him, in what exudes the quintessential tragic arc.
Moments earlier, Rick had told Chelsea that the plan was for them to spend the rest of their lives together, and we can sense Chelsea finally feeling the validation she’s been desperately yearning for.
Sadly, Chelsea is caught in the crossfire and is shot in the chest by one of Sritala’s bodyguards and dies as Rick crouches over her.
Interestingly, a lot of fans recently guessed that Chelsea could be this season’s victim, after clever viewers spotted her wearing a necklace inspired by a character that also dies in The Outsiders.
Rick Hatchett
HBO
As the tension rises and gunfire echoes around the resort, Rick carries Chelsea’s body across the wooden path only to get shot in the back by a reluctant Gaitok (Tayme Thapthimthong) at the instruction of Sritala. He finally earns himself a spot as Sritala’s bodyguard, even if it costs Rick his life.
Rick and Chelsea fall into the pond, bringing the season full circle to the moment at the start where Belinda’s son finds a body floating in the water. We now learn that it’s both Chelsea and Rick’s bodies floating in the pond — and it turns out they did spend the rest of their lives together.
In a final bittersweet moment, we see Rick and Chelsea’s bodies being wheeled toward an airplane in bodybags, seemingly uniting the two characters in death as well.
Lochlan Ratliff
HBO/ Sky
We’re also giving an honourable mention to Lochlan Ratliff (Sam Nivola), as he may have technically died only to have his fate turned around at the last minute.
As many predicted, the poisoned seeds of the ‘suicide tree’ fruit finds its way into the Ratliff’s blender, only for Lochlan to drink the poisoned juice accidentally before collapsing by the pool.
Timothy Ratliff (Jason Isaacs) finds his son and starts cradling Lochlan, seemingly accepting his role in his youngest son’s accidental fate. In Lochlan’s dying visions, he sees himself drowning and can see several figures looking up at him from the surface of the water.
But that would make four major character deaths and at least two security guards, which seems a little excessive, especially given the symbolic threes we see throughout the season. Plus, it wasn’t his fate to drink that juice.
As Rick sinks into the afterlife, Lochlan resumes consciousness in his father’s arms and tells Timothy: “I think I just saw god.” Whether a near-death experience or an actual resurrection, it nods to the broader themes of mysticism that underline the series and (hopefully) puts an end to Timothy’s fantasies about killing his family.
And with that, we can understand why White needed 90 minutes to tie up all of the show’s loose ends.
