Whoopi Goldberg Weighs in on Carrie Underwood's Decision to Sing at Trump Inauguration
Whoopi Goldberg said she won't be watching Carrie Underwood's performance at Donald Trump's inauguration, but supports the singer's decision.
Whoopi Goldberg may not be a fan of Donald Trump, but sheâs supportive of Carrie Underwoodâs decision to perform at Trumpâs inauguration. See what Goldberg said about Underwood on âThe View.â
Goldberg is never one to hold back her feelings on âThe View.â And, when it comes to Trump, the daytime talk show co-host has made it very clear where she stands politically.
During a January 14 discussion on âThe Viewâ about Underwoodâs upcoming Trump inauguration performance, Goldberg said she can âstand behindâ the country singerâs decision. That doesnât mean that she would make the same choice, however.
âPeople do what they do for whatever reason,â Goldberg said.
âI stand behind her,â she noted. âIf I believe I have the right to make up my mind to go perform some place, I believe [she has] the same right. I have to support. It doesnât mean Iâm particularly interested. I wonât be watching, but thatâs me.â
âThe Viewâ co-host Sunny Hostin also said she has no plans to watch the inauguration, but supported Underwoodâs choice as well. âI think art is art and you have a right to perform where you want to perform,â she said.
Co-host Alyssa Farah Griffin also weighed in, explaining her hope that âweâre moving beyond the era of politics where we want to cancel peopleâs livelihoods because we donât like their politics.â
She noted, âIf you have a problem, you register your complaint by not downloading her songs and not going to her shows. But, I also think from a business standpoint, itâs not a bad decision for Carrie Underwood.â
Griffin elaborated, saying that the âAmerican Idolâ winner is âovernight going to become an icon of MAGA and the American rightâ and she is âprobably going to make a lot of money off ofâ performing at the event. âSo I get why she did it,â Griffin said.
Underwood is set to perform âAmerica the Beautifulâ at Trumpâs inauguration on January 20.
Following the announcement, Underwood shared in a statement: âI love our country and am honored to have been asked to sing at the Inauguration and to be a small part of this historic event. I am humbled to answer the call at a time when we must all come together in the spirit of unity and looking to the future.â
She will perform the song after J.D. Vance is sworn in as vice president and before Trump is sworn in as president.
