Why Yoda Gave Anakin Skywalker A Padawan, Explained By Ahsokaâs Original Actress
Yoda paired Anakin and Ahsoka for a reason.
At MegaCon 2025, Ahsoka Tano actress Ashley Eckstein explained why Master Yoda gave Anakin Skywalker a Padawan and confirmed that Ahsoka was the perfect choice. Although some viewers bristled at the reveal in Star Wars: The Clone Wars that Anakin actually had a Padawan between Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones and Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith, Ahsoka quickly became one of Star Wars' best characters. Now, her relationship with Anakin is considered one of the most significant throughout Star Wars movies and TV shows.
During a panel at MegaCon 2025, the original Ahsoka Tano actress, Ashley Eckstein, revealed more about why the Anakin Skywalker and Ahsoka Tano duo is so iconic and has become so important. According to Eckstein, "Yoda assigned Ahsoka to Anakin because he knew. He knew that that's what Anakin needed." Eckstein elaborated, "They were meant to be together... They are family. They love each other."
Was Yoda Right That Anakin "Needed" A Padawan?Yoda Picked Ahsoka Intentionally... But Was That Really For The Best?
When Eckstein referenced Yoda knowing a Padawan was what Anakin needed, she meant both a Padawan in general and Ahsoka specifically. From the beginning, it was clear that Anakin was a concern to the Jedi, especially the Jedi Council. As soon as he arrived on Coruscant in Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace, the Jedi were wary of Anakin and the limitations they saw in him. By Attack of the Clones, Anakin had improved in some ways but had become even more troubling in many others.
The Jedi didn't know about Anakin's most egregious act, the attack on the Tusken Raiders, but they were aware that Anakin was temperamental, sensitive, unpredictable, and stubborn. For that reason, Yoda felt Anakin needed a student—someone to test his patience and mirror his bad behavior back to him (after all, Ahsoka was happy to break the rules and disobey direct orders if she felt it was right). While any Padawan may have challenged Anakin a bit, Ahsoka was truly perfect for Anakin because she pushed all the right buttons to get him to see his own faults.
The question nevertheless remains: did this do more harm than good? Eckstein is clear that there could have been no better master for Ahsoka than Anakin, which I think is true, but the relationship was also doomed from the start in some ways. In fact, Eckstein's very point about the two of them being family and loving one another is precisely why this relationship presented issues of its own for Anakin. Anakin consistently proved his issues with attachments, and giving him a little sister was a dangerous choice, even if Yoda meant only to give Anakin a Padawan.
Our Take On Ahsoka's Importance To AnakinAhsoka Became Anakin's Second Most Important Relationship
Whether one believes Ahsoka helped Anakin improve as a Jedi or pushed him closer to the dark side—especially because he was so affected by Ahsoka's departure from the Jedi Order—it's undeniable that Ahsoka reshaped Anakin Skywalker's Star Wars timeline from the moment he met her. At the time, Anakin of course had no idea what Ahsoka would come to mean to him. In the end, though, Ahsoka really became Anakin's second most important relationship, only behind his relationship with Padmé.

Many factors contributed to Anakin Skywalker's fall to the dark side of the Force, but how much did Ahsoka's departure from the Order influence him?
It will be interesting to see how this relationship continues to develop, particularly if Hayden Christensen returns as Anakin Skywalker in Ahsoka season 2. Whether he does or doesn't, my stance has always been that Ahsoka Tano was an incredible addition to Star Wars, and her existence has fleshed out Anakin's character so much more, all for the better. The in-universe impact Ahsoka Tano had on Anakin Skywalker may remain up for debate to a certain degree, but their relationship is nevertheless one of the best in Star Wars.
