Wild return to NHL duty still missing their best player
The Swedes were back from 4 Nations for practice on Friday, but U.S. players Brock Faber and Matt Boldy won’t join the team until before puck drop tomorrow in Detroit.
The Wild officially return from the two-week 4 Nations break with an early puck drop at Detroit on Saturday. They play that game the same way they played their past six — without their best player.
Kirill Kaprizov, who on Jan. 31 underwent surgery to repair a lower body injury, has yet to begin skating, according to associate head coach Jack Capuano, who ran three practices this week while head coach John Hynes worked as an assistant coach with Team USA in Boston.
If Kaprizov, who still leads the Wild with 23 goals and 52 points despite missing 19 games to injury, won’t be back for a while, the team at least expects to have defenseman Brock Faber and forward Matt Boldy back after playing in Team USA’s overtime loss to Canada in Thursday night’s 4 Nations Face-off championship game.
Capuano said he couldn’t confirm either will play against the Red Wings on Saturday but added, “I would think those guys, if they’re healthy, are going to want to join their team and play and participate.”
The Wild enter the stretch run firmly in the postseason picture, fifth in the Western Conference and 6-4-0 in their past 10 games. In addition to Kaprizov, the Wild will be without forwards Jakub Lauko (lower body injury) and Ryan Hartman, who has seven games left on a 10-game suspension handed down on Feb. 3.
Lauko went through an entire practice on Friday at TRIA Rink, but Capuano said he didn’t anticipate him traveling to Detroit.
“He’s close, really close, but no,” Capuano said. “He’s skated the last few days. He’s feeling better. But we want to make sure that, just talking to the trainers and, obviously, (Lauko), that he’s 100 percent ready to go.”
As for Hartman, he missed three games before the break and obviously gained no ground on his punishment during it. Suspended as a repeat offender, Hartman got 10 games for slamming the head of Ottawa’s Tim Stützle to the ice during a faceoff after the two were penalized for fracas earlier in the second period.
Hartman won’t be eligible to play until Oct. 9 at Pittsburgh, the day after the NHL trade deadline.
“He’s embraced it, and he’s gonna do everything he can to maintain his skill level, and his conditioning level, so when he does come back in he’s ready to play,” Capuano said.
The Wild’s other 4 Nations players — Swedes Jonas Brodin, Joel Eriksson Ek and Filip Gustavsson — were all back in practice on Friday and will play against the Red Wings.
“It feels like you’re still in the motion of how to play goalie, but I think I would’ve been a little more rested if I was on the beach for a full week,” said Gustavsson, who was in net for two of Sweden’s games, both overtime losses. “I can plan a vacation for the summer instead.”
Capuano said he hadn’t talked to Hynes, who will be back behind the bench on Saturday about whether Gusvafsson or Marc-Andre Fleury will be in goal.
Briefly
Captain Jared Spurgeon returned to practice after being felled this week by an illness. “He said it was quite the illness there for about a day and a half, but he’s staying hydrated and feeling better,” Capuano said.
