Will Ferrell tells Oscars to "suck it" after his road trip documentary is snubbed
Will Ferrell has told the Academy to "suck it" after his documentary Will & Harper didn't receive any Oscar nominations.
Will Ferrell has told the Academy to âsuck itâ after his documentary Will & Harper was snubbed at the Oscars.
The documentary was released on Netflix and depicted Ferrell on a road trip with his friend Harper Steele, who he first met on Saturday Night Live during the â90s. Steele had recently come out as transgender and the pair took the trip across America to process the change.
While the documentary was critically acclaimed, it didnât translate to Oscar success.
In an appearance on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, Ferrell told the host: âAsk me if we got Oscar-nominated.â

âItâs such a good documentary, itâs one of the best documentaries Iâve seen in years,â responded Colbert. âIt was beautiful, it was timely, it was heartfelt, I was inspired by it. How was the Oscar nomination?â
âWe didnât get it,â Ferrell said. Colbert expressed his condolences, and then joked: âWell, fuck those guys, right? Fuck the Academy, say it!â

âEspecially the doc branch, the doc branch of the Academy,â Ferrell joked. âYou donât want to hang out with the doc branch. What a bunch of losers; in fact, I hope thereâs some of them here tonight. See, if youâre a member of the doc branch â suck it!â
Will & Harper was shortlisted for two Oscars â Best Documentary and Best Original Song for Kirsten Wiigâs composition âHarper and Will Go Westâ. However, the film didnât make the nominations for either of those categories.
On the press tour for the film, Ferrell denounced transphobia, saying: âI think we fear what we donât know.

âThere is hatred out there. Itâs very real and itâs very unsafe for trans people in certain situationsâŠBut I donât know why trans people are meant to be threatening to me as a cis male. I donât know why Harper is threatening to me.â
He continued: âItâs so strange to me, because Harper is finallyâŠherâŠSheâs finally who she was always meant to be. Whether or not you can ultimately wrap your head around that, why would you care if somebodyâs happy? Why is that threatening to you? If the trans community is a threat to you, I think it stems from not being confident or safe with yourself.â
Ferrell said he had âzero knowledgeâ about the trans community before Steele came out to him. He explained: âI had met trans people, but I didnât have anyone personally in my life. So this was all new territory for me, which is why I think this film is so exciting for us to kind of put out there in the world. Itâs a chance all of us in the cis community to be able to ask questions and also just to listen and be there as a friend to discuss this journey.â
