Will Smith has been announced as a presenter at the Grammys on Feb. 2. The high-profile appearance, nearly three years since the infamous Oscars slap, is part of a planned comeback this year in the music space.
The Recording Academy released its latest crop of presenters on Jan. 31 and the list â topped by Taylor Swift â included Smith. He will introduce a salute to famed music producer Quincy Jones, who died in November. Jones was executive producer of The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, the â90s TV sitcom that catapulted Smith to stardom as both a rapper and actor.

This isnât the King Richard starâs first awards show appearance since he stormed the Oscars stage in March 2022 and slapped host Chris Rock over a joke about Smithâs wife, Jada Pinkett-Smith.
Smith, 56, performed at the 2024 BET Awards in June and attended the 2023 African-American Film Critics Association Awards. He was close to performing in a hip-hop tribute at the 2023 Grammys, but dropped out. He did perform at the A Grammy Salute To 50 Years Of Hip-Hop live concert later that year.

Smith also released two high-profile film projects since the Oscars slap â 2022âs Emancipation and 2024âs Bad Boys 2: Ride or Die, which was a huge box office success. He attended the premieres for both and did press as he maintains a strong fan following, as evidenced by being one of TikTokâs most-followed stars (74.6M followers).
But Smithâs scheduled Grammys appearance comes ahead of a big career comeback for him as he is set to release three albums this year with the goal of a potential full tour.
Based on a True Story is the name of the Academy Award- and Grammy-winning performerâs new album series. The initial installment, Rave in the Wasteland, marks Smithâs first studio album release since 2005âs Lost and Found.
Smith has slowly been rolling out new music for almost a year. There was the gospel/hip-hop âYou Can Make It,â which he performed at the BET Awards with the Sunday Service Choir, about navigating choppy waters in the wake of the Academy Awards debacle. (As a result of hitting Rock, Smith was banned from the Oscars for 10 years and resigned from the academy.)
He also released âWork of Artâ with Russ, which also features his son Jaden Smith, and âTantrumâ with Joyner Lucas. The latest release, out now, is âBeautiful Scars,â with Big Sean featuring OBanga. The songâs video is Matrix-themed, 27 years after Smith turned down the role of Neo in the film.
Those singles will be included on the first Based on a True Story album. In an interview with Billboard, Smith said that he recorded 60 songs and decided to âseparate the material into seasons like a television show. So Iâm releasing three seasons of this television musical show and calling the 10 tracks for each season âepisodesâ instead of songs. The first season is called Rave in the Wasteland. The actual date hasnât been picked yet, but Iâm releasing season one at the end of March.â
Smith said the first album is âabout the idea of learning to dance in your darkest moment. Itâs also all the things I wrote directly after the Oscars.â
He also said he selected collaborators âwho were with me during my difficult time after the Oscars. ⊠This first round of collabs are friends and allies.â
The second album will be called The Gift of Madness, which Smith said comes from a Quincy Jones quote after Jones was asked what he saw in frequent collaborators Smith, Michael Jackson and Oprah Winfrey.
âQuincy said all three of them have the gift of madness, that they believe impossible shit can happen,â Smith said. âSo season twoâs music lends itself to that: belief and possibilities, much more upbeat and joyful. Weâre looking to release that in June. For yet-untitled season three, weâre looking at the end of the year.â
Smith performed two sold-out shows in December at the Observatory North Park in San Diego. (During one of the shows, he publicly distanced himself from Sean âDiddyâ Combs.) He also performed at the Rock in Rio Festival in September in Rio de Janeiro. This year, heâs set to headline Franceâs 2025 Positiv Festival on July 31 â and he hopes things grow from there.

âIâm starting outside of the country this summer; my getting in shape,â Smith said. âMy dream is to work my way into a stadium tour. Iâll probably do arenas this year and next year to see [if] can I build a big enough, exciting enough show to require a stadium run. I have gigantic ideas about staging, using music, acting and screens â Iâve had a show in my mind for almost a decade.â
Smith told Billboard, âThis is a beautiful time in my lifeâ after going through what he previously called a âtransformativeâ period post-Oscars, and weâll assume that extends to his personal life. In 2023, Pinkett-Smith, 53, revealed in her memoir that they had been secretly separated for six years. The couple, who share children Jaden and Willow, had no plans to formally end their marriage, but live apart.
While their relationship status remains as vague as when Pinkett-Smith labeled it a ârelationship of transparency,â there was somewhat of an update this week.
âCall it what you want,â one source close to the couple told People. âThey are living their own lives but havenât completely severed ties.â

Another source told the outlet that they âare still togetherâ but not living together. They "have had separate homes for years.â
The hot-and-cold couple was photographed leaving a restaurant together in November 2024 and Pinkett-Smith had her arm around Smith. She also accompanied him to the L.A. premiere of Bad Boys: Ride or Die along with their family in May 2024. Weâll soon see if that support extends to his planned musical comeback.
