Despite Ringo Starr originally cementing himself as a pivotal person in music and pop culture, and him being persistently in the public eye for over six decades, it appears we still have a lot to learn about him. While promoting his most recent (and fairly lacklustre) record, Look Up, Ringo Starr revealed during an interview that he has never once eaten pizza.Â
The revelation came out of Starr admitting he was allergic to a number of different items and, therefore, didnât take any chances when it came to eating food. This has led to Starr avoiding food that many of us would consider dietary staples. It would be bizarre to hear anybody admit to never having eaten pizza, but the fact heâs a Beatle who has had an unlimited amount of money and resources available to him since a young age makes the whole thing feel particularly perplexing.Â
âIâve never had pizza, or a curry,â he said during an interview, âIâm allergic to several items [âŚ] With pizza, you donât know what youâre putting in it half the time. Or the curry. So Iâm strict with myself since it makes me ill immediately.â
Itâs hard to tell why Starr stays away from these foods specifically. He says they make him ill but then admits to never having eaten them, so itâs difficult to know whether he has tried them or looked into what goes into each dish to ensure he wonât become sick. It appears that rather than trying different foods, he is happy living in ignorance.
When you think about Ringo Starrâs contributions to The Beatles (and thereafter), there is no doubt that he played an important role in the band. Firstly, he added a swing element to the percussion, separating the Beatlesâ music from many other bands of the time. Itâs hard to hear their songs and not want to dance, and Starrâs drumming contributed massively to this. That being said, he was never much of a songwriter.
There is a question to be asked over whether Starr would likely have been a better songwriter if he had eaten pizza. Itâs less a point about missing out on the food and is instead a reference to the fact that heâs not a man willing to leave his comfort zone. Writing music doesnât just mean putting a tune together but putting yourself on the line creatively and emotionally. An unwillingness to eat pizza or curry also shows a slight hesitation to fully embrace other cultures, which could also have stunted the drummer creatively.
When you listen to some of the best songs from The Beatles, you will find tracks that withstand the test of time because of their vulnerability and their ability to transcend different sounds and cultures. In order to do this, artists need to have experienced a great deal with their lives and be willing to put themselves out there, no matter what the consequences might be. Starr hesitates to do either of these things to the extent that it can only be concluded that he might have written some better tracks if he had hunkered down on a stuffed crust from time to time.Â
