Xander Schauffele has been out of action for several weeks with a rib injury. That situation is coming to an end, however, as the two-time major champion has confirmed his plans to return to competition.
Schauffele told Golfweek's Alan Shipnuk that he plans to return for the Arnold Palmer Invitational presented by Mastercard, which will be played March 6-9 at Bay Hill in Orlando, Fla. The World No. 2's last appearance was on the opening day of the TGL with the New York Golf Club team, but days earlier he played The Sentry, where he finished tied for 30th.
Schauffele's injury is an acute intercostal strain/micro tear. He explained that he was injured during the off-season, but initially underestimated the severity of the injury, leading him to play in pain at Kapalua Golf Resort and then at the TGL.
"I need a little more TLC [Tender Loving Care], especially at 31 versus 25 and make sure everything is oiled correctly," Schauffele said. "I thought I'd be fine and kept going and played through it at Sentry and at the first TGL match. I was pretty much tapped. I knew it was getting significantly worse and needed time off."

Schauffele also said he regretted missing the Farmers Insurance Open and the Genesis Invitational, both of which ended up being played in his hometown of San Diego with Torrey Pines as the home venue:
"With really thick rough, I could potentially re-injure myself," he said. "Everyone I've talked to said the worst thing you can do is come back to soon. Guys have told me about being hurt 6-12 weeks later. I don't want to deal with a stop and go. Once I'm back, I just want to go. I've been instructed to be patient and make sure I'm 100 percent."
This is the first time in nine seasons as a professional that Xander Schauffele has suffered a major injury. Schauffele has won nine times on the PGA Tour, including two major championships, both in 2024 (PGA Championship, The Open Championship).
If he returns to action as he plans for the Arnold Palmer Invitational, Schauffele could play in The Players Championship the following week. He would then have three more opportunities to play on the PGA Tour before the Masters (Valspar Championship, Houston Open and Texas Open).
As for the TGL, the high tech league will complete its regular schedule before March 6, so Schauffele would only be back with New York Golf Club for the semifinals if the team qualifies.
