Warning: This story contains spoilers from the You season five finale.

Hello, karma.

After Joe Goldberg's serial killing journey came to an end in season five of You, Penn Badgley reflected on his character's "appropriate" demise in the series finale.

"It's doing everything that could possibly be done in a satisfying manner," he told Entertainment Weekly in an interview published April 24. "I think he's delivered to his truly appropriate end. Then the only thing left is to realize [that] there is no ending that could satisfy anyone 100 percent, because justice for a man like Joe isn't in and of itself satisfying."

Simply put, "He's an abuser. He's a killer. He's a bad person."

After five seasons of Joe killing people whom he saw as an obstacle in his delusional quest for love—including ex-girlfriend Guinevere Beck (Elizabeth Lail), her best friend Peach Salinger (Shay Mitchell) and his wife Love Quinn (Victoria Pedretti)—he's arrested thanks to his new girlfriend Louise Flannery aka Brontë (Madeline Brewer).

You Season 5 Ending Explained: Penn Badgley’s Joe Goldberg Meets His Fate

Despite begging an armed Brontë—who rescued him from a fire at Mooney's after his wife Kate (Charlotte Ritchie) tried to murder him with past victims Nadia (Amy-Leigh Hickman) and Marienne (Tati Gabrielle)—to kill him amid a physical altercation, she refuses and instead shoots his penis off. For Penn, he believes that the real satisfaction of Joe's incarceration, instead of a death in his infamous glass cage, will only come with time.

"If you were to think of this as a real man and a real story and real victims, the only thing that can truly heal and satisfy is time, as long as justice has been served," he explained. "In the case of Joe, justice has been served."

The damage to Joe's genitals is also, in some ways, a symbolic end of his journey, as the bookstore owner's killing sprees often began with an intimate partner.

CLIFTON PRESCOD/NETFLIX

"The bedroom is a state of mind: he has a very specific kind of idea of prey, and he refuses to admit that he is a predator," he noted. "That was super important, I think, that he wouldn't meet his end in a cage, as probably people were expecting, but for him to meet his end… The process begins in bed, in a state of undress, where, for the first time, I think you see him engaging in the act and you don't want it to happen."

In fact, Penn explained to Tudum that Joe is so fixated on the notion of love that he'd rather die than go to prison because he realizes "there's no plausible scenario where he gets to have the life and love that he's fantasized about."

"I think it really dethroned him there and deconstructed him, and that's what was important to me," he told the outlet. "His currency was being this romantic sexual icon, which is what allowed him to do what he did for so long. So I was very happy with that."
