Zendaya Joins Iconic 'Shrek' Franchise As Shrek And Fiona's Teenage Daughter

Thereâs a new face in the âShrekâ universe! None other than Zendaya is joining âShrek 5,â which is slated for a December 23, 2026 release, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The âEuphoriaâ star is set to play Shrek and Fionaâs teenage daughter, which pleasantly surprised fans.
In the light of the exciting news, which was announced via the upcoming filmâs first trailer, Zendayaâs tweet from 2017 is now resurfacing, per USA Today. A then 20-year-old Zendaya tweeted, âI watch Shrek too often in my adulthood.â The official Twitter page for the âShrekâ movie quote retweeted Zendayaâs 2017 post, commenting âThis aged well.â
While there isnât much known about the plot yet, itâs confirmed that Mike Myers, Cameron Diaz, and Eddie Murphy will reprise their beloved roles of Shrek, Fiona, and Donkey, respectively. Read ahead to see everything we know about âShrek 5â so far.

Directed by Walt Dohrn and Conrad Vernon, âShrek 5â will coincide with the 25th anniversary of the first installment, which premiered in 2001 and earned a whopping $487 million worldwide. Per ScreenRant, the âShrekâ franchise has earned over $4 billion.
Ten years into the âShrekâ franchise, the Puss in Boots character (voiced by Antonio Banderas) got two spin-off movies in 2011 and 2022. According to Variety, a spin-off centered on Donkey is in the works and set to begin once âShrek 5â wraps.
âI love Donkey,â Murphy told Entertainment Tonight, according to Variety. âYou know, they did âPuss in Bootsâ movies. I was like, âThey should have did a Donkey movie.â Donkey is funnier than Puss in Boots. I mean, I love Puss in Boots, but he ainât funny as the Donkey. ⌠I would do a Donkey movie.â
Then, in a 2024 interview, Murphy told Collider that ââShrekâ is coming out and Donkeyâs gonna have his own movie.â
