Shrek 5 teaser trailer and cast announcement for Christmas 2025
After a decade-long wait, fans of the animated film Shrek will finally be treated to the fifth instalment of the beloved ogre’s adventures. The highly anticipated movie has been a topic of conversation for many, with fans eagerly awaiting to see what new developments will unfold in the chaotic world of Far Far Away.
Six months after its initial announcement, Universal Pictures and DreamWorks Animation dropped a new trailer for Shrek 5 on Thursday. The 30-second clip featured Shrek, Fiona, Donkey, Pinocchio, and Shrek’s now-teenage daughter, Felicia.
While this sneak peek certainly excited fans, the big surprise was the unexpected casting of an A-list star. Zendaya, known for her roles in Spider-Man and Euphoria, will join the Shrek universe next Christmas. The actress will voice the character of Felicia, Shrek and Fiona’s daughter, who is now all grown up.

Zendaya will be joining the returning voices of Mike Myers (Shrek), Cameron Diaz (Fiona), and Eddie Murphy (Donkey), all of whom are reprising their iconic roles. The movie has a confirmed release date of December 23, 2026, meaning fans will still have to wait a little longer before they can once again dive into the crazy world of Shrek.
Despite the excitement surrounding the film’s return, many fans were quick to notice a major difference in the character designs, especially when it comes to Fiona. Several pointed out that the redesign made her look Far Far Away from the character they had grown so fond of over the years.
One fan commented: “Wow it actually used to look better and more detailed before….. no wrinkles in the forehead, no rich shadows…” Another fan added, “Bro they turned her into a mobile game character.” A third fan joked, “Fiona got recast,” with a fourth following up with, “That’s not my Cameron Diaz.”

While these comments highlighted the mixed reactions to Fiona’s redesign, it’s important to note that the last Shrek film was released 15 years ago. Since then, technology has evolved significantly.
Animation techniques and character designs have progressed, leading to a 'cleaner' and more polished look. Despite this, many fans still felt a sense of loss as per the original looks from the characters.
Shrek 5 was officially announced in July 2024, following the end of Puss in Boots: The Last Wish. The film had teased the next instalment, with Puss and his friends, Kitty Softpaws and Perrito, heading to Far Far Away. Although Shrek 5 was initially set to be released in July 2026, the date was pushed back to December, making it a perfect Christmas treat for fans.
Although the wait may feel long, 2026 will be an exciting year for Zendaya, who will not only be voicing Felicia in Shrek 5, but will also star alongside her boyfriend, Tom Holland, in Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey and Spider-Man 4.
