Zendaya is joining the fifth instalment of Shrek – as the voice of the much-loved ogre’s daughter.
The 28-year-old actress is joining fan favourites Mike Myers (Shrek), Eddie Murphy (Donkey) and Cameron Diaz (Fiona) in the swamp, with the film set for release next year.
Zendaya’s involvement was revealed today in a new trailer, which saw Shrek, Fiona and Donkey scrolling on the Magic Mirror, between different TikTok-style clips of Shrek.
And it seems Zendaya might have manifested the role, as she tweeted in 2017: “I watch Shrek too often in my adulthood.” Today, Shrek’s official social media accounts reposted her tweet with the quip: “This aged well.”
The film had been set for release on July 1 2026 – marking 16 years since the last sequel aired and a quarter of a century since the original premiered in 2001.
But today’s trailer revealed that it will be out later than planned, over the Christmas period in 2026.
Shrek 2 was released in 2004, while the third premiered in 2007 and Shrek Forever After was released in 2010.
Walt Dohrn and Conrad Vernon, who have worked on the franchise before, are directing the fifth film. In fact, Vernon has voiced Gingerbread Man and Dohrn was the voice of Rumpelstilskin.
The franchise kicked off in 2001 when Shrek embarked on a quest to rescue Princess Fiona, winning the Oscar for best animated feature film.
Shrek is based on the 1990 book from writer William Steig.
The original film paved the way to the sequel which saw Shrek meets Fiona’s parents; while Shrek The Third followed the ogre’s journey to find the next heir to the throne; and the fourth instalment explored Shrek’s midlife crisis and his wish to erase his past.
The franchise also includes the 2011 spin-off Puss In Boots starring Banderas and its 2022 sequel titled Puss In Boots: The Last Wish – both of which were Oscar-nominated.
Zendaya has recently got engaged to her partner, fellow actor Tom Holland.
According to sources who spoke to TMZ, Holland popped the question between Christmas and New Year's, “dropping to one knee in a very intimate setting in one of Zendaya's family homes in the United States.”
