The wait is finally over.
Game 1 of the NBA Finals is here. The Celtics are back in the Finals for the second time in three years and are looking to avenge their loss against the Warriors in 2022. After going a league-best 64-18 in the regular season, Boston had a relatively path to the Finals, going 12-2 and sweeping the Indiana Pacers in the Eastern Conference Finals.
The Mavericks, meanwhile, are back in the Finals for the first time since their win in 2011 and are seeking their second title in franchise history. Their path to the Finals has been a bit more arduous, needing six games to beat the Clippers in Round 1 and six games to beat the Thunder in the Western Conference semifinals. Their Western Conference finals win was a bit easier, defeating the Timberwolves in five games as Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving scored a combined 59.4 points per game in the series.

But the countdown to tipoff for the NBA Finals is just hours away. Tip-off is actually scheduled for 8:37 p.m., a few minutes later than the 8:30 time listed on TV.

The Celtics placed shirts on each seat inside of TD Garden ahead of Game 1, with the vast majority of them being green while strategically placing a handful of white shirts in the loge.
On one side of the court, the Celtics placed white shirts in a sea of green to spell out “617” and on the other side of the court they placed white shirts to spell out “BOS.” Behind one of the baskets, they placed white shirts to spell out “18” as they’re seeking their 18th title in franchise history.
The shirts say, “You got Boston,” a play on the chants made by fans of teams the Celtics have gone up against so far this postseason.
The Mavericks star point guard arrived at TD Garden over three hours before tip-off with a ball in hand.
Of course, Irving is back in the arena he once called home for two seasons. As many Celtics fans likely know, the breakup wasn’t great in 2019 and has led to some animosity between him and the team’s fans whenever he’s returned to Boston. But just in case you need a refresher, here’s a timeline on why Celtics fans boo Irving whenever he returns to Boston.
