BBC Comic Relief viewers were emotional after an unexpected surprise aired live on the show as it paid tribute to celebrities that died in the last year.
The televised fundraiser celebrated 40 years on air after the first Comic Relief in 1985. Comic Relief is designed to raise money to support those at risk of domestic abuse and families affected by conflict and climate change.
Article continues belowSir Lenny Henry who co-formed the fundraiser with scriptwriter Richard Curtis stepped down as host last year, and instead Jonathan Ross, Davina McCall, Joel Dommett, Alison Hammond, Rylan Clark, and Alesha Dixon stepped up to the plate.
In 1988, the first Comic Relief saw 30 million people tune in to watch Blackadder - the Cavalier Years and the Young Ones on University Challenge. They raised a huge £15 million for their first televised fundraiser.
During the live show, Made In Chelsea star Jamie Laing hobbled onto the Red Nose Day stage hours after completing his Ultra Marathon Man challenge on Friday.
He said: “It was a long way, but it was an incredible journey. The people were amazing. The donations were amazing. You guys here are incredible The whole thing was just awesome in every single way. It was amazing. It was amazing.” Joel Dommett revealed Jamie had helped to raise £2,053,835.
After some Comic Relief sketches including an EastEnders special that looked at Phil Mitchell seeking treatment for his depression, a Strictly Come Dancing mockumentary, and a Not Going Out and Beyond Paradise crossover viewers weren't expecting the emotional turn.
As the tone turned sombre, the hosts introduced a tribute to the celebrities that sadly lost their lives in recent years. Former One Direction star Liam Payne and drag queen The Vivienne were among the celebrities remembered in an in-memoriam-style segment during Red Nose Day.
Among the other stars featured in the video montage were singer Cilla Black, TV presenter Caroline Flack, Girls Aloud singer Sarah Harding, comedian Victoria Wood and presenter Sir Michael Parkinson.
There were also The Wanted star Tom Parker, comedians Ronnie Corbett and Ronnie Barker, Harry Potter star Robbie Coltrane, broadcaster Sir Terry Wogan, music star David Bowie, comedian Paul O’Grady and Hairy Bikers star Dave Myers.
