Mayo farmers 'still in the dark' over ACRES payments
Mayo Sinn Féin TD questions Minister in the Dáil over outstanding payments to farmers
Mayo Sinn Féin TD, Rose Conway-Walsh has questioned new Minister for Agriculture, Martin Haydon on when Mayo farmers will get outstanding ACRES Payments and why the government has let down so many farmers who desperately need what is owed to them.Speaking in the Dáil, Teachta Conway-Walsh said: “Every day I am inundated with farmers contacting me about when they will receive payment. I hope that by me questioning the Minister at the first opportunity he will understand the urgency of getting this sorted.“This is no way to treat farmers. The excuse of a ‘glitch in the computer system’ has worn thin. How can a ‘glitch’ continue for months on end!“Shockingly several thousand farmers in Mayo and other counties are still without payment. They are in the dark about whether they will receive an additional payment or a bill for their 2023 participation in the ACRES Scheme.“Last year processing of the 3,000 outstanding cases for 2023 was moving very slowly but, with the announcement of the General Election, the Minister insisted that ACRES payments were on track for a late November payout.“A payment run was done for the 2023 cohort late last year, however 40 percent of these farmers have not received their 2024 payment.“Added to the mix are the circa 9,000 farmers who joined ACRES in 2024 (Tranche 2). One third of these are yet to be paid.“Farmers are rightly frustrated that they haven’t been paid and compounding the issue is the absence of a phone contact for the ACRES section. If a farmer wants an update on their position in the scheme they have to send an email, generally receiving a generic response from the Department stating that they are processing payments and will be in touch in due course.“Unlike other schemes like BISS and ANC etc farm advisors do not have access to ACRES payments. This must be changed.”The Sinn Féin spokesperson for Enterprise, Tourism and Employment continued to highlight the double standards within the Department saying:“The Department upholds a very rigid set of deadlines that farmers have to adhere to or penalties will issue. However, there seems to be no issue with the Department missing deadline after deadline with it comes to the processing and payment of ACRES which farm families are dependent upon.“Farmers across the state have suffered grievously as a result of Storm Éowyn, they cannot be left waiting any more. All outstanding ACRES 2023 and 2024 payments must be made without delay and this debacle must never be allowed to occur again.”“I have also asked that an urgent grant scheme be made available for the repair of sheds and other farm equipment damaged in the recent storms.”
