Nancy Mace makes rape accusations in "scorched earth" speech
Mace alleged that in November 2023, she "accidentally uncovered some of the most heinous crimes against women imaginable."
Representative Nancy Mace of South Carolina used a nearly hour-long speech on the U.S. House floor Monday to accuse her former fiancé, Charleston-area businessman Patrick Bryant, of physical abuse and recording sexual acts without consent.
Saying she was going "scorched earth," she also alleged that Bryant and his business associates engaged in acts of rape and sexual misconduct and that the state's attorney general failed to act on evidence she provided.
Bryant "categorically" denied the accusations. "I take this matter seriously and will cooperate fully with any necessary legal processes to clear my name," he told The Associated Press.

Mace has a history of advocacy on issues related to sexual violence. In 2019, she publicly shared her own experience as a survivor of sexual assault while advocating for a rape and incest exception to South Carolina's abortion ban. On Monday, she was joined in the House gallery by several women she said had also been victimized by Bryant and others.
Her decision to speak publicly follows months of inaction from authorities, she claimed. She said she took the allegations to South Carolina law enforcement, but no indictments followed.
Mace's decision to publicly air serious allegations on the House floor is an unusual move that grants her legal protection under the "speech or debate" clause, which shields lawmakers from being sued for statements made during legislative acts. Her accusations, if substantiated, could have significant political and legal consequences, particularly as she considers a gubernatorial run.
What To Know
Mace, a Republican, alleged that in November 2023, she "accidentally uncovered some of the most heinous crimes against women imaginable," including non-consensual recordings and the exploitation of underage girls. She identified four men she said were involved, including Bryant, who was once an active supporter in her reelection campaign.
Mace claimed South Carolina's top prosecutor, Attorney General Alan Wilson, took no action after she reported the alleged crimes. Wilson, a Republican in his fourth term, is seen as a potential opponent if Mace enters the governor's race.
"Did South Carolina's attorney general have any of these predators indicted after being provided clear-cut and dry evidence, including video, photos, and witnesses?" Mace said during her speech. She added that her office had set up a tip line for additional information on the allegations.
Wilson's office denied Mace's claims, calling them "categorically false" in a statement issued after her speech. The office said it had "not received any reports or requests for assistance from any law enforcement or prosecution agencies regarding these matters."
Mace declined to provide additional comments to reporters after her speech but said she felt "at peace" with her decision to come forward.

Fellow Republican Representative Lauren Boebert of Colorado, who sat behind Mace during the speech alongside Florida Representative Anna Paulina Luna, said: "Nancy Mace is our friend, and we wanted to support her and give her the encouragement she needed to get that message out."
Meghan McCain, TV personality and daughter of the late GOP Senator John McCain, said in a post on X, formerly Twitter: What [Nancy Mace] is doing tonight is incredibly brave. I literally can't imagine detailing my own date rape and sexual assault on the floor of Congress. If a powerful Congresswoman wasn't believed by law enforcement, imagine what life is like for the rest of the country.
