Skeleton Crew Star Jude Law Finally Reveals How Much Jedi Training His Star Wars Villain Had (& It's Less Than Some Thought)
Not as much as you thought...
Star Wars: Skeleton Crew star Jude Law has confirmed that his mysterious "Jedi," Jod Na-Nawood, had never used a lightsaber before the show. Jod Na-Nawood's story went full circle by the end of Skeleton Crew, with the pirate captain pretending to be a Jedi due to his Force powers and the lightsaber now in his possession. Many watched his lightsaber style attentively, with some discussion about his lightsaber form, while others pointed to the hesitance and suggested he'd never used a lightsaber before.
Screen Rant is a media partner at MegaCon 2025, where Jude Law dropped in as a surprise guest at the Skeleton Crew panel. There, he confirmed that he consciously decided to do no training with the lightsaber, rather than the kind of extensive fight choreography seen with many other actors. He knew how to handle a sword - he'd done stunts with a sword before - but he was essentially making it up as he went along. "We kind of liked the idea that he had zero lightsaber experience," Law explained.
Why Did Some Viewers Think Jod Na-Nawood Used Mace Windu's Lightsaber Form?
The comment is rather amusing, not least because some viewers believed they saw hints of Form VII in Jod Na-Nawood's lightsaber form. There's a reason for this; there are two variants of Form VII, Vaapad and Juyo. Mace's is the most famous, but Juyo is actually the oldest, with some sourcebooks hinting it may predate the Jedi Order itself. Juyo is an aggressive lightsaber form that practitioners slip into almost instinctively, and it was frowned upon by the Jedi because it veered too close to the dark side.
Jod Na-Nawood's lightsaber form was all about instinctive flourish and raw aggression, simply because he was completely untrained; he'd received some basic guidance in using the Force from an Order 66 survivor some years earlier, but that had apparently never translated into handling a lightsaber. To be fair to the Jedi who taught him, this was a time when it was very hard to acquire kyber crystals, meaning they would have had to let Jod use their own blade. That would have been most unwise.
Our Take On Jod Na-Nawood's Lack Of Experience
We tend to overestimate how much training it takes to use a lightsaber. While non-Jedi can use them, the most important thing is simply that a person is sensitive to the Force, and is therefore able to bond with the blade. If they do this, then the lightsaber becomes like an extension of their very will, meaning they are truly a "force" to be reckoned with. Jod Na-Nawood is especially dangerous with a lightsaber in his hands, simply because he has the Force. That made him the perfect villain for Star Wars: Skeleton Crew.
