Adolescence: Official trailer
Stephen Graham has revealed two specific crime stories from different parts of the UK directly inspired his new Netflix drama, Adolescence.
The harrowing four-part series follows parents Eddie (played by Graham) and Manda Miller (Christine Tremarco) whose lives implode when their 13-year-old son Jamie (Owen Cooper) is arrested for the murder of one of his female classmates.
Co-created by Graham and Jack Thorne, the series tackles the radicalisation of young boys by misogynist online communities such as the Manosphere in conjunction with the rise of knife crime.
Speaking at the seriesâ premiere in London, the Boiling Point star reveals he was compelled to create the drama after reading about two separate incidents in the news.
âWeâd been asked to create a one-shot piece which was going to be a series,â Graham explained. âSo we were coming up with the possibilities of what weâd make it about.

âAnd Iâd read an article in the paper about a young boy stabbing a young girl, and it made me feel a bit cold.
âThen, about three or four months later there was a piece on the news. And it was a young boy, again, who had stabbed a young girl and they are young boys. Theyâre not men. And it was the complete opposite end of the country.â
Knife crime has been steadily on the rise in the UK despite a decrease in homicides overall. Teenagers are over twice as likely to be fatally stabbed than they were 10 years ago, according to 2024 figures from the Office for National Statistics.
âSo, if Iâm really honest, it really hurt my heart,â the actor admitted. âFor many different reasons.
âPredominantly as a father but also, kind of, where weâre at in society for this to happen.
âMe and Phil [Barantini, director) were in the car and I just came up with the possibility of an idea.â

Graham also explained that a love for a staple documentary series served as inspiration, which is apparent in the first episode which details Jamieâs arrest and interrogation by the police.
âIâm slightly obsessed with 24 Hours in Police Custody, as well,â he shared.
âWe knew, because of the technique and how we shoot that we had to grab the audience straight away, and thereâs no better beginning than smashing through the door on a raid and coming into the house.
âPointing their guns at a 13-year-old boy. With that possibility weâd grab the audienceâs attention.â
He immediately landed on screenwriter Jack Thorne to pen the script, known for his iconic This Is England series with Shane Meadows as well as another recent Netflix hit, the critically acclaimed Toxic Town.
âJackâs one of the finest writers,â Graham praised. âHe writes the human condition with such complexities.â
The latest project from one of the UKâs most reliable acting talents is shaping up to be one of the best TV series of the year, so make sure you donât let Adolescence pass you by this week.
Adolescence is available to stream on Netflix.
