Almost four years after The Weeknd announced he was boycotting the Grammys, the "Blinding Lights" singer returned to the 2025 award show for a surprise performance at Los Angeles Crypto.com Arena.

The Weeknd is stepping into the blinding lights of the 2025 Grammys.
Four years after boycotting the award show, the four-time Grammy winner—whose real name is Abel Tesfaye—made a surprise return to the stage at Los Angeles' Crypto.com Arena to perform his songs "Die For You" and "Timeless." (For more stars who showed out for the 2025 Grammy Awards, click here.)
During his Feb. 2 performance, The Weeknd—wearing an oversized coat with a hood, a pair of black sunglasses, and black gloves—stood on stage alone while a red light spotlighted him. Once he started singing his track "Die For You," the hands of more than a dozen backup dancers rose up around him before their bodies slowly appeared on stage as well, surrounded by smoke.
And his show-stopping concert didn't end there. The Weeknd—who took the stage along with fellow performers Billie Eilish, Chappell Roan, Charli XCX, Doechii and Sabrina Carpenter during the big night in music—also brought out Playboi Carti to perform a rendition of their collaboration "Timeless."

Nearly four years before his unexpected Grammy return, the "Blinding Lights" singer—who most recently won the Gramophone for Best Melodic Rap Performance in 2022 for his Kanye West collaboration "Hurricane"—announced in a statement to the New York Times that he was boycotting the ceremony due to "the secret committees."
His March 2021 statement continued, “I will no longer allow my label to submit my music to the Grammys.”

Since then, The Weeknd has been a notable absence from music's biggest night, especially for Recording Academy president Harvey Mason Jr.
"I heard him, I felt his conviction," Harvey said while introducing the singer to the stage Feb. 2. "What we all want is an organization dedicated to the wellbeing of all music makers and one that reflects the entire music community for now and for future generations."
And that's why The Weeknd's boycott didn't go unnoticed. As Harvey explained, "Over the past few years, we've listened, we've acted, we've changed."
