A US wildlife influencer is set to be banned from Australia after posting a video of herself taking a baby wombat away from their mother on social media.
On March 12, Sam Jones – who posts online as samstrays_somewhere – posted an Instagram reel of herself grabbing a baby wombat and running away. “I caught a baby wombat,” she said, showing it off to her followers.
Jones also described it as a “dream” to be holding the video, but social media users were not best pleased. Many chimed in with complaints about how the animal looked distressed and how its mother had clearly chased the influencer to hand it back. Sam did release the animal after making the video.
She has since come under fire for it and will seemingly not be allowed back to Australia after the incident.

As per ABC Australia, Jones’ visa status has gone under investigation and is being reviewed by immigration officials.
“Either way, given the level of scrutiny that will happen if she ever applies for a visa again, I’ll be surprised if she even bothers,” Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke said in a statement. “I can’t wait for Australia to see the back of this individual, I don’t expect she will return.”
As of writing, Jones’ visa has not been canceled, meaning she is still free to travel in Australia. The incident has also been called an “outrage” by Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese.

In terms of trying to find the original video, her Instagram had previously been public, but is now private and her TikTok page returns a deleted profile. Only Jones’ Threads account is active, but she hasn’t addressed the incident there.
The clip has been posted by different outlets, including on Reddit by outraged Australians who couldn’t believe it.

“Arrest. Fine. Deport. Ban,” one commented. “It’s not just the entitlement it’s the disrespect. Absolutely shameful,” another said.
The Australian government has also been called upon to investigate whether Jones had broken any environmental or animal welfare laws. “This is cruelty for the sake of content and most people don’t find that acceptable,” they said.
