In the recently concluded MBC Friday-Saturday drama “When the Phone Rings“, Yoo Yeon-seok portrayed Baek Sa-eon, the youngest presidential spokesperson with flawless family background, looks and abilities. Donning sharp suits that accentuated his striking physique and delivering passionate, single-minded gazes of devotion, he showcased a touching romance with Chae Soo-bin’s character. The performance garnered fervent reactions not only in Korea but also across South America and other international regions.
Yoo Yeon-seok, who openly expressed a desire to be associated with the nickname “Sexy Eyebrows”, shared in a recent interview, “As an actor, earning even one nickname is no easy feat. Sometimes, such tags stick around so much that it becomes frustrating if you can’t surpass them with a new character. I’m grateful that I’ve earned the nickname ‘Sexy Eyebrows’ and that it’s been remembered fondly. It’s energizing as I step into my 40s as an actor.”
Although the show’s ratings weren’t particularly high compared to its time-slot competitor, SBS’s “The Fiery Priest 2”, it gained traction through word of mouth, achieving its highest nationwide household rating of 8.6% during the finale. Following the drama, Yoo Yeon-seok’s SNS followers doubled to 4.2 million, and he ranked first in December’s TV and OTT drama actor buzz rankings, surpassing even the cast of “Squid Game 2”.
Reflecting on the success, Yoo Yeon-seok said, “It was an intense shoot, but the love it received overseas wiped away all the struggles. I think people really enjoyed the ‘tsundere’ male lead.”
When asked about memorable reactions to his character Baek Sa-eon, he laughed and said, “I found the term ‘Hee-chin-ja’ (a man obsessed with Hee-joo) amusing.” He added, “I interpreted and acted as a man deeply devoted to one woman. The character was fun to play because it allowed me to explore various elements like comedy, romance, action and thriller.”

For this performance, Yoo Yeon-seok won the Top Excellence Award and the Best Couple Award at the MBC Drama Awards. He remarked, “My first drama was with MBC, so receiving such a significant award there after 16 years was meaningful.”
From Chilbong in “Reply 1994” to Goo Dong-mae in “Mr. Sunshine”, Kang Dong-joo in “Dr. Romantic” and Ahn Jeong-won in “Hospital Playlist”, Yoo Yeon-seok’s career has been defined by memorable characters. Now in his 40s, he shared, “I was worried if I could still do romances in my 40s, but this gave me courage. I want to explore more mature romances and boldly take on genres I haven’t tried before. I also want to work across various mediums, like variety shows and musicals, and if opportunities arise overseas, I’d like to gain experience there as well.”
